Job Title: Audio/Visual Design Engineer

Position Description:

The Audio Visual Design Engineer will report directly to the Audio Visual Practice Manager.


Required Qualifications:

The Audio Visual Design Engineer will report directly to the Audio Visual Practice Manager.



The AV Design Engineer will be responsible for operating as the primary or secondary contact between Varia Systems and the client. The AV Design Engineer will exercise independent judgment to work with the end user (client) of the audio visual system to design a system in accordance with the client’s specific needs.




-Pre/Post Sales Engineering and in the field AV system Engineering/Commissioning.

-Perform and document site surveys including site visits including Needs Assessment Reports.

-Prepare proposals and designs for audiovisual system integrations and installations.

-Create construction and system integration documents (CAD Drawings, Blue Prints and CSI Specifications)

-Communicate and coordinate technical design solutions with clients, design teams and vendors.

-Coordination and integration of AV and telecommunications systems with other intelligent building systems.

-Provide sales and technical staff with high end technical support on both a pre- and post-sales basis including attending project meetings.

-A/V system commissioning.

-Performing AMX, Crestron or Extron control system programming, implementation, and testing for System Integration client projects.

-Leading programming code reviews as required.

-Contributing to design review and code review as required.

-Play an active role as the liaison between the project management team and installation team with regards to the design and installation of the system being installed.

-Ability to control costs in the design and management of projects and make sound financial decisions based on budget and customer satisfaction.

-Develop and maintain knowledge of current and new technologies that company offers.

-Leading resolution of field code issues.



Valid driver’s license.

Reliable transport to get to Varia office.

Desired Qualifications:




-Bachelor’s degree preferred

-InfoComm CTS Certification preferred

-Crestron or AMX certification preferred

-Comprehensive understanding of basic electronics and NEC Codes.




§  At least 5 years’ experience of overall Audio Visual commercial solutions/service industry experience.

§  At least 2 years of recent experience as a hands on AV systems design engineer.

§  Ability to read and understand schematic/line diagrams, riser diagrams, reflected ceiling plans and floor plans.

§  Strong electronics knowledge and trouble shooting skills, knowledge of signal flow, audio/visual signal types, connector types and terminations.

§  Proper rack fabrication knowledge, general mechanical, rigging and customizing skills.

§  Knowledge/experience with control systems: AMX, Crestron and Extron.

§  Knowledge/experience with audio DSP’s: Biamp, Clear One and Polycom.

§  Knowledge/experience with digital multi meters, impedance meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes and vector scopes. 

§  Strong knowledge of digital video/audio transmission and protocols.

§  Experience using Autocad to create system integration drawings and blue prints

§  General networking knowledge.




§  Ability to work under pressure and deadlines and be a team player.

§  Be able to perform daily assigned tasks successfully.

§  Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well with other people.

§  Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to multi-task and react to changing priorities.




§  Industry certifications: Crestron, AMX, Extron, Biamp, Clear One, LifeSize, Polycom, Infocomm, etc…
